Freckles and Birthmarks

Freckles, also referred to as ephelides, are tiny colored spots that often increase when the skin is exposed to the sun. These can appear mostly on the face, or also on the hands, arms, shoulders, back and neck. Freckles are usually passed on genetically through a recessive gene and tend to show up in childhood and adolescence. They are due to a glitch in melanin production within the cells.

Birthmarks are among the most common skin discolorations, and include a variety of markings such as moles, strawberry marks, café au lait spots, hemangiomas, and port wine stains. Abnormal blood vessels and pigmentation issues are the most common causes of birthmarks. They come in a range of colors, including red, pink, purple, blue, white, brown or tan.

Treatments

While sometimes these markings have been thought of as “cute,” many patients do not enjoy having freckles or birthmarks and seek professional help to remove or reduce them. The Biomed Spa has helped hundreds of clients to look and feel their best, creating smooth, blemish-free skin that radiates health and vitality.

Freckles and birthmarks can be addressed with any of the following:

In addition to fading freckles and birthmarks, laser skin therapy is excellent at removing other skin imperfections including enlarged pores, rosacea, age spots, uneven skin texture, saggy skin, sun damage, wrinkles and fine lines, and facial redness. Laser treatment is safe, non-invasive and non-surgical. However, it can take several sessions to begin to see comprehensive results.

In the meantime, it’s important to continue to protect against the sun’s harmful UV rays, which can often make freckles and birthmarks darker. Remember to always wear protective clothing such as a sun hat, and to keep a broad spectrum sunblock on hand even during overcast days.
